My Sassanid Army
I was sitting, just now, admiring my Sassanid army arrayed on the workbench - see bigger photo in my Sassanid Photo Album - and the thought struck me that, even though it's now approaching 3,500 WAB points in size, it isn't all that big really, and doesn't look all that impressive. Mad - or what?
Three elephants, sixty cavalry, one hundred and forty-eight infantry and a few odds and ends - I think! Hmm... Not that many really. Maybe I should make it even bigger...
On the other hand, it does look pretty good, and it's plenty big enough to be fun to game with. And I do have other things I want to do - other armies to build.
The Roman army consists of about one hundred and fifty-two infantry, four scorpiones, thirty-eight cavalry, and six camels.
I am going to do a few more Romans though - so I might have to do a few more Sassanids to keep things even.
Yes, definitely going mad.
Colin Speirs and I are talking and thinking about rules for Romans and their enemies. I had sort of lost my way - lots of ideas and no idea what to keep and what to discard. Col is a good, and clever, rule-writer, and I really needed a second pair of eyes on the job. We're thinking that what we end up with will, in all probability end up 'feeling' more like Black Powder than WAB - though with a somewhat different method for command and control - we don't think that used in Black Powder is appropriate for ancients without modification. We want a game which feels less like an overgrown skirmish, but which is still fun, like WAB - most of the current 'big battle' sets - Fields of Glory, DBMM, etc - don't strike us as fun (though we appreciate that others may well love them!).
