Sassanid Archers
Happy New Year everyone!
Here is, quite possibly, my last unit of Sassanid infantry. It's a unit of 32 Miniature Design Studio archers, with the banner and shield transfer from Little Big Man Studios. Painting is all the usual methods - white primer, base colours, Army Painter Quick Shade 'Strong Tone', Testors' Dull Cote to finish off.
I've posted a couple of bigger photographs in the Sassanid Photo Album.
As I said, this might well be the last Sassanid infantry unit in the army. I might do another block of 36 spearmen sometime, but not just now - I've had enough of Sassanid infantry for the time being!
As far as Sassanids go, I am definitely going to paint one unit of Savaran super-heavy cavalry, with another a possibility, depending how fed up I get when I paint the first of them.
For the Romans, I have a 16 figure unit of legionaries, and a 24 figure unit of auxilia to do for definite. In addition to that, I quite fancy a few camels, and I might do another unit of auxiliary archers.
I did have misgivings about my Romans the other day though... By the third Century AD, most, if not all, 'Roman' units recruited locally, and had done for some time. So I am just a little bothered that I perhaps ought to have painted my Romans with a similar skin-colour to that which I used for my Sassanids (apart from, possibly, the prefect in command of each cohort). But maybe I should just stop worrying, stick with the current colour and argue the 'artistic licence' angle. The last units of auxilia though, are definitely going to be 'local'.
Anyway, Romans next. Auxilia or Legionaries? Wait and see!
