Pegasus Hobbies Palm Trees
So, I lied - it's really about palm trees for 'Fire in the East'! But I had you going for a moment, didn't I? Anyway, palm trees always make me think of desert islands. The discs bit will become clear in a moment!
Some time ago (23rd June last year, according to the postmark on the box) I bought some palm tree kits made by Pegasus Hobbies. Straight out of the box, they look dreadful - light brown trunks, garish green fronds. But they're well detailed, and look as though they'll turn out well with a decent base-coat and some dry-brushing.
I've been buying some of my bases, sabot bases and the like from those nice people at Litko Aerosystems, and had no complaints - other than getting 'stung' by HM Customs and Excise for VAT, and having to pay Royal Mail's 'handling charge'. But then I learned that there is a UK manufacturer of 'laser-cut' MDF bases: Warbases.
So I placed a trial order on 1st February - for some 50 and 60mm diameter round bases, mostly for trees (discs in other words! See, I told you this post was really about Desert Island Discs!). They arrived today - that's pretty quick! The prices are lower, I only have to pay for inland postage, and hopefully, Royal Mail and HM Customs will keep their greedy snouts out of the trough!
I've also placed an email enquiry as to whether they can make my custom cavalry 'sabot' bases too. I'll let you know when I get a response. The bases look fine, by the way - they're round, smooth, have smooth edges and are the right size - there's not much more one could ask for really!
